Ingredients
Scale
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- Additional butter for brushing
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk until steaming but not boiling. Remove from heat.
- In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, butter, and salt. Stir until butter is melted.
- Add the yeast mixture and the egg to the bowl. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into squares.
- Place rolls on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise again for 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake rolls for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Brush hot rolls with melted butter before serving.
Notes
- These rolls are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days.
- You can also freeze the rolls before baking. Just let them thaw and rise before baking.
